Merrickville, on the Rideau Canal, a World Heritage site offers you a wealth of activities, attractions - and choices - which are sure to enhance your stay here:

Historic Merrickville – Soak up the ambience and architecture of another era. Merrickville has more designated heritage buildings than any Ontario community of comparable size. A stroll down our picturesque streets is a must! Visit www.merrickvillehistory.ca for more information.

Artists and Artisans – The Merrickville area proudly features studios, galleries and dozens of artists-in-residence – painters, potters, carvers, wood turners, glass artists, metalsmiths and more. While many studios are open year-round, the Merrickville Artists’ Guild Annual Studio Fall Show & Sale, on the last weekend in September and the first weekend in October, is always a hit.  For a list of local artists, visit www.merrickvilleartists.com

We are pleased to display the paintings of local artist Paul Laberge in our bar! Visit his web site for more information!  http://www.visualreality.ca/about.cfm

Shopping – You won’t find chain stores or factory outlets here. What you will find are one-of-a-kind boutiques and specialty stops filled with locally handcrafted leatherwork, quilts, award-winning mustards, home-made ice-cream, unique garden accessories . . . According to local lore, the department store Sam Jakes opened in Merrickville was once the largest between Chicago and Montreal. Almost 100 years after his death, Merrickville is once again, a vibrant Victorian-age shopping destination. For a lsting of shops, studios and boutiques, visit www.realmerrickville.ca

Fairs and Festivals – from the annual Community-Wide Yard Sale to fine art festivals, antique and craft shows, "Canalfest," classic car shows, agricultural fairs, to "Spirit of Merrickville," an old-fashioned celebration of the Christmas Season . . . whatever the season, Merrickville finds a reason to celebrate. And you’re cordially invited to join in!  For more detailed information on upcoming events, visit www.realmerrickville.ca.

Outdoor Recreation – Canoe or kayak down the Rideau. Tour the bird sanctuary aboard the popular Harriet By, docked at the Merrickville Depot. Enjoy a round of golf at several nearby courses. Hike the Rideau Walking Trail or other nearby trails.

Scenic Country Drives – Follow the Rideau Canal on its journey from Kingston to Ottawa, a canal with a lock system that amazingly has changed little in its 170-plus year history. Pick a country road, any road, and take in the heritage homes, churches and history that envelops you. Lakes, dramatic Canadian Shield rock formation, foliage, acres of green space, farmland, maple bushes, charming villages . . . the wondrous Rideau Valley awaits.  For more information visit www.rideauheritageroute.ca.

Entertainment – Sam Jakes has its own pub, Lock 21, which offers great food and drinks. And our seasonal patio also has live entertainment. Several other local pubs and restaurants also feature entertainment on weekends. And Merrickville also has a thriving community theatre group. You can also catch live theatre in most nearby towns.

Ottawa, Our Nation’s Capital – Have the best of both worlds. Take in the Parliament Buildings, museums, galleries, a concert or sports event in Ottawa, only 45 minutes away, then retreat to the country.
Or simply kick back and relax.  Visit www.ottawa.ca for more details.

Sam Jakes Inn offers customized, one/two-night packages (with varying dining options) for our guests. Packages include: in-season self-guided walking tours, boat tours on the "Harriet By, canoeing and cycling, golf, cooking classes, and our year-round "Spa Sneakaway Special."
